The Dualist Perspective on Matter
The manner in which many individual parts can produce a phenomena that's not qualitatively apparent is called a merchant phenomena. As a modern physicist, I don't think everything's made of the same stuff. And so I'm open-minded to there being a variety of things. But if you told me there was something that was interacting with the body conveying thoughts or consciousness or something, I would be inclined to like posit new forms of matter or fields and just think of them as a different kind of materialism.
