Is There a Happy Medium in the Middle East?
The Muslim Brotherhood, the oldest largest Islamist movement in the world, they did not only quite well, but they won to various degrees consecutive elections in 2011 and 2012 during the Arab Spring. And also ultra conservative Islamists, the Salafis did surprisingly well in Egypt's first democratic elections,. You add that to the 41% or so that the Muslim Brotherhood got, and that's a pretty big slice for, you know, for Islamist parties, around 70%. That freaked a lot of people out. When I came back to the US and I saw how people were freaking out to the election of Donald Trump, I did see some interesting cross-regional echoes.
