The World's Greatest Crop Scientist, Norman Borlaug
Norman Borlaug was an Iowa farm boy who became a crop scientist. He worked at DuPont in the 1940s to make species of wheat and rice that could thrive in different environments. In 1944, the Rockefeller Foundation sent him to Mexico to boost wheat production. By 1956, Mexico is self-sufficient in wheat production. These techniques are also used in Pakistan by 1968, Pakistan is self- sufficient. So both of these nations produce wheat faster than their population growth. It's easy to criticize this if you're in a comfortable office in Brussels or Washington, DC. But what would you think if you were starving to death?
