Samantha: My grandmother used to say a phrase that, you know, a lot of my peers have never heard of before. It's the idea that the two people who are going around an object should be inseparable. And also particularly among black speakers of American English, there's a long tradition of warning against splitting the pole. Martha: The bread and butter saying is at least a hundred years old, but the superstition goes back to St. Augustine in the fourth century AD.
