Zigaboo Zigabu Modaliste's Sissy Strutt Beat
Zigaboo was talking about how he had seen a drummer named stanley radcliffe. Stanley radcliffe was playing something that would influence zigaboo in such a way that you can hea it in many of his beats, including sissy strut. To help you all understand how that ratcliffe beat could evolve into sissy strut, russ tried something a little bit more difficult. I'm going to attempt to play the radcliff beat and then morf into zigabu sissy strut beat. i think i did pretty ok considering my base cops add the drums, and you're often running out of time.
Drummers like Clyde Stubblefield, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Bernard Purdie defined the sound of the bands they played with not because of their flashy chops, but because they knew how to lock down a groove. On this episode, Kirk goes deep into one groove apiece by each of those drummers - Stubblefield on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Modeliste on The Meters' "Cissy Strut," and Purdie on Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" - with help from special guest drummer Russ Kleiner.
