CHAPTER

The One Trick of Quantum Mechanics

A quantum computer tries to exploit phenomena, superposition, amplitudes and interference in order to solve certain problems much faster than we know how to solve them otherwise. The basic building block of a quantum computer is what we call a quantum bit or a qubit. That just means a bit that has some amplitude for being zero and some other amplitude for being one. But if I've got, let's say, a thousand qubits, the rules of quantum mechanics are completely unequivocal that I don't just need Amplitudes for each qubit separately.
