The founder of the John Birch Society was a candy maker based in Belmont, Massachusetts. Robert Welch joined forces with his brother after his first candy making venture failed. The James O. Welch Company made pom-poms and other sweet treats. He ended up both very rich and very bitter about the New Deal,. About government regulation, and above all, about the state of democracy in the US.
