William Walker's army was reduced to just 33 men. 22 of his volunteers had died in Mexico. 8 more had been grievously wounded. They were all almost immediately arrested and taken back to San Francisco for trial. His chief legal claim to fame was that he'd introduced a bill as state assemblyman to ban free black people from living in California. The presiding judge was Isaac Ojir, the first DA for Los Angeles.
