Bitcoin founder Satoshi was worried that even 32 megabyte blocks would be too hard to process. He put the limit down to one megabyte, which is a million bytes invalid. The small blockers valued one megabyte blocks for two reasons: They believe in being able to read the chain and they want to maintain this norm of never hardforking. But then there's an idea called segregated witness that allows for a tiny block size increase with a soft fork.
