In Our Time: Philosophy
What's the Root of the Analytical Tradition?
In some ways, yes, it was radical if one takes the immediate historical context. The whole of the analytical tradition was founded by means of what's called the linguistic turn. And that was a very significant break with the kind of hegalian idealist project which was dominant in cambridge and oxford at the time. On the other hand, if you go much further back and you look at socrates, the founder of the whole subject, his medium for philosophical inquiry was conversation with people he happened to meet in theagora. So in that sense, it's an entirely authentic continuation.
