The Disappointment of Cult Studies
CNN's John Sutter spoke with Matthew Kuchins about his new documentary, "Cult" He says he was disappointed that the film seemed to be an exercise in demystifying Swann rather than demystify her group. Some religious studies scholars are concerned by cult literature and how it stigmatizes groups under consideration for study. But they say there is also a social incentive to not alienate the community providing this primary material for their career.
