In Paul's day, the churches were meeting in private homes. As the church grew, they got too big for houses and had to start meeting outside places. Some scholars have argued that since the home was the sphere of woman's influence, women who had groups meeting in their homes could have more authority. But once the men started taking over, they started being disputes.
