The Importance of the Psychology in American Politics
The relationship between the ideas and the politics is basically the guiding theme of my book. I saw that there was a great kind of incongruity between what politicians would say at one moment and what intellectuals were saying at another. And it's only rarely when they're synced up. It's during the second half of the book, in my view, with the commencement of the Reagan administration that you finally see this creation of what a former Heritage Foundation executive called the decision-making loop where the ideas were being generated by policy wonks but not implemented.
