Edward O. Wilson popularized the selfish gene theory, which was based on competition and struggle to pass along genes in a Darwinian sense. Goodall has been put off by some of what she sees as a reductionist use of sociobiology. But people who came after her assimilated as graduate students, a sociobiological perspective. So as the theory developed, it was more and more dealt with in the currency of the genes.
