When he was growing up, my father would make us read in a room for an hour. He gave me the book enters game and I didn't read it because I wanted to be outside. But after many hours of staring at the walls his dad asked him if he'd like to know what he thought about enter game. Tony had not read the end of enters game but when he went back and read it "it blew me away" In fiction anything can happen so that allows you to go in many different directions. The effect you're trying to make with the reader is always the same: them being immersed in a story that's going to stay with them.
