Dostoevsky was tied to a post and about to be shot. A guy came on a horse drawn buggy carrying a letter, the Zar commuted their sentence at the last minute. The argument is that the Zar did it on purpose like this to kind of reassert his power. He ended up doing 10 years hard time and got put in military and he ended up in Siberia.
