What's Up With Mushy Peas?

I'd like to ask you a couple of questions that some of my students had for you, though. One of them was, what's up with mushy peas? My theory on this, I don't know too much about where mushy peas were cooked and mushy peas are the result of the mistake of leaving the peas on the stove for just far too long.
