The Debate Over Loan Words
This debate was fundamentally a debate over the nature of the english vocabulary. Should it be more germanic or more latinate? In the end, it's fair to say that the purists lost the debate. Those who tried to roll back the clock were fighting a losing battle. Even though a lot of those latin and greek lone words survived, the fact is that a lot them also disappeared.
