The Search for National Enemies in Liberia
NPFL fighters from specific rural areas were often particularly severe on those of their fellow countrymen, whom they found living in Monrovia. The search for national enemies became inseparable from the search for personal enemies. Land disputes, family quarrels and related rifts between friends and even relatives claimed victims all over the place. A social worker later commented that a poor or low status villager could kill the teacher who flunked him, the man who beat him.
