The Difference Between a Workhouse and a House of Correction
Margaret Brennan appeared before the magistrates charged with absconding. She'd run away from the workhouse, but that wasn't actually a crime in itself. The house of correction was definitely a punishment regime. Of hard work for many hours a day. Life was hard back there. It was probably something between an orphanage at a workhouse.
