The Greeks themselves did not necessarily think of themselves as a collective. They identified more with their city-states, and the city-state itself had its own rivalries. So there is no one way of being Greek. And then when individuals and groups moved abroad, settled abroad for various reasons, they were taking perhaps aspects of their mother's city to their new environment.
