Social Media Can Have a Negative Effect on Mental Health

Dr. Caitlin Costello is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco. Social media use in greater amounts has been linked to poor mental health outcomes with anxiety and depression being the most common. A particularly problematic type of engagement appears to be social comparison where teens are comparing their own lives to what they see others post. It's very easy to find images of self-harm or eating disorders that appear to glorify it.
