In 1972, the United States and China basically established a relationship. The reason for this is predominantly economic; it's not out of the question that they'll get involved in some way. By 1989, there are more Han Chinese living in Lhasa than Tibetans. That many people have actually been imported from China into Tibet to drown out Tibetan voice.
