The Tax System in France

Tax system is frankly too generous a term for a cluster of policies which are anything but systematic in nature. As a result these tax policies often had little co ordination between them. The taxes of the old regime can be grouped as follows, farmed taxes, direct taxes, religious taxes and feudal juws. Let's start with the certified organic taxes first. France at this point in time had many taxes that were farmed by a group of individuals known as the farmer generals. They paid the monarchy a fixed sum, and they got to keep the difference between what they actually raised and what they had agreed to pay the king.
