Day La Soul and all of the native tongue acts became both blessing and curse. It left them open for mockery by other rap crews, and it diminished them in the media as peacenix. When Jersey City brothers Atrelle and Jarrett Cordes tried to get their duo PM Dawn signed to a New York rap label in the 80s, they were told by executives at Tommy Boy Records that they sounded too much like Day La Soul. By the start of the 90s, Day La and Tribe were already edging away from the native tongues ethos.
