Lewis thinks that the book of Genesis is saying something very profound about human nature. It's very important in his theology that Adam made this mistake and that we all are in Adam and we just repeat that same mistake. Lewis makes a big mistake here in the book when he talks about Calvin's doctrine of total depravity. He says humans can do good even though they're sinful. But Jonas Salk, Cures Polio, who is a fundamentally good act, but it doesn't get him into heaven.
