Charlie Brooker grew up in Stamford Hill, a stronghold for the ultra-orthodox Jewish community. The area was once home to many Jews fleeing Eastern Europe after the Tsarist pogroms of Russia. But as it became more crowded and squalid, some upwardly mobile Jews moved there. Now that bathing is just so private, and you do it in your own home, you lose that.
