We started systematically enslaving and slaughtering animals 12 thousand years ago. That's what domestication is, if you just look at our fossil record. We didn't start conceiving of humans being metaphysically transcendent, godlike against nature or above nature until after we started domesticating animals. And so for us to systematically enslave, abuse and slaughter them in an enormous scale to build modern civilization, we have to come up with abstract constructs to justify it,. It's just too difficult to emotionally reconcile.
