The Hedonic Treadmill Problem

When the focus is pleasure or happiness, we tend to habituate both up and down. If you're going to invest effort and energy in something as a relationship over a period of decades or your entire life, it seems like a very fragile way to actually sustain this thing. The effective pleasure does diminish over time, but not so with meaning and purpose. We play a crucial role in building the extent to which we feel fulfilled or unfulfilled with our lives.
