The founding fathers seemed pretty adamant about this. George Washington in his farewell address urged us to avoid getting drawn into the conflicts of Europe. And so both John Adams and John Quincy Adams, I think would have agreed with that,. It made no sense for them to do anything in Europe other than trade and make money. That's what they had done for centuries. It was what they were going to continue to do for centuries.
