How Does the Past Speak to the Present?
Cheryl: I poured over the archives of black newspapers dating back to the 20th century and marveled at what has changed for black people in America. The daily life of black Americans in a really segregated environment, one in which Jim Crow laws really had the heft of life and death. And there was also kind of the thrill and the fun of looking through the ads that were in that newspaper. So I want to say in writing this story, it was very cathartic for me. But if I had a stated goal, it would be that.
