One theory is that the consumption of meat allowed homo rectus to thrive as a species, because meat has much more calories. This was before cooking and there was no way to get this kind of calories out of food surs like chewing. But then once you go to much higher levels of meat, you then have the excess calories that then you can kind of pour into a larger brain.
