Network Effects - Why Do They Matter?

The notion of network effects has been formally used in economics since the 1970s. The idea is that each additional person joining allows for additional communication possibilities also for those who are actually already on the network. Once you maybe hit some threshold where to be the third person on a telephone network is not really worth much effort or much cost, but once there's a thousand people or a million people on it then it becomes much more valuable.
