Giles Flaser argued that if an effective altruist was faced with a choice between saving a child, trapped in a burning building and saving a Picasso. He said they would choose the Picasso over the child because they could sell the Picasso for lots of money. The idea that we should be giving some amount of an income to charity or doing other good things is just perfectly natural part of common sense, he says.
