The State's Threat to the Maytays
The trigger for this is of course the serving of the forests which are actually in tribal states. In February this year the Chief Minister Beren Singh ordered that these forest lands should be surveyed and brought under the purview of reserved forests. And naturally it's a threat because the tribals use the resources from the forest. A lot of this forest land is also used for growing poppy, for poppy cultivation. So there's been the sustained move to curtail the cultivation of poppy and to bring those areas perhaps under the cultivation of marijuana, GANJAR. Because Beren Singh in 2019 pushed a bill wanting to legalize marijuana because he said it can be used for medicinal and industrial purposes.
