Pay as You Trash in Sanford, NY

The town of Sanford, New York was looking for ways to raise money. Mark Green estimated that pay as you throw could bring in about $900,000 a year. Because they were paying for volume, people no longer tossed their bottles and cans into the trash. The recycling rate quadrupled and overall trash volume was cut in half.
