The Pharisees are an ancient boogeyman. We actually don't have any texts written by anybody who describes themselves or is described by somebody within that text as a Pharisee with one exception being Paul's letters. The rabbis do have a lot of sympathy for the Pharisees. But they are not Pharisees themselves, or at least they don't ever describe themselves as such. So I think there's something instructive in the fact that the Pharisinges are so influential upon the Jewish tradition.
