The Gift of Wisdom Is a Habit Infused in Our Souls by God

The gift of wisdom is a habit infused in our souls by god, disposing us to be moved well by the holy spirit in our judgment about divine things. So saint thomas thinks that prayer is necessary for the contemplative life because it obtains from god the assistance of the holy spirit. But there is far more in the mystery of god and in his workings of providence, his grace in individual persons and his directing of history. That is totally inaccessible to philosophy, which is built up on human reason alone. And christian faith alone provides us with access to these higher and deeper aspects of reality - we could not know simply by our own reason.
