What Is an Author?

Foucault asks, what were Saad's works before he was consecrated as an author? Were they merely roles of paper on which he endlessly unraveled his fantasies while in prison? So are all things an author wrote a part of their collective works? Where do we draw the line here? And this question extends to something like art as well. Does someone have to claim their art is art for it to be considered art?
