The Politics of Social Media in Latin America

TikTok is a favourite platform for evangelicals in Latin America. But because it's owned by a Chinese firm, ByteDance, many are worried that Beijing could use the app to harvest users' data or advance its national interests. Despite attempts by both China and the company to offer reassurance, several governments and regulators have taken action to ban it. Many analysts would say there hasn't been a huge amount of action to self-police these platforms.
