In the twelfth century, a young woman told her disappointed would be boy friend that if she should ever lose her current lover, well, she would give him a shot. This seemed to work, and the annoyingly persistent suitor backed off. Then not long after that, the young woman married the man that she had ultimately chosen. The back up boy friend made one last romantic gesture to try and win the heart of his now married beloved. Because nothing says, i'll treat you better than him than an elaborate legal proceeding.
