The Hippocampus and Memory
Ancient techniques for recalling long lists or speeches revolve around memory palaces, imagined journeys and so on. The hippocampus probably evolved a long time ago in vertebrates. And studies of this part of the brain have shown that birds become unable to navigate it if it's damaged. We don't see these same stripy patterns in other vertebrates but there are parts of the brain that have the same connections.
