The Importance of Domestic Political Support
President Dwight Eisenhower noted the dilemma of long-term competition was to maintain political support for fiscal sacrifice. He said it is not easy to convince an overwhelming majority of free people everywhere that they should pull in their belts, endure marked recessions and living standards while bearing the expenses and costs of battle in more fortunate countries. Lo and behold, we did sustain it throughout the course of the Cold War.
