Intonation is basically the melody of the language. When you use a certain type of melody, it indicates one thing and another. It's cultural and it's norms that are associated with how people speak in a certain culture or a certain area. So sometimes what happens is that when you apply your own intonational patterns onto English, you're using the code from your own native language rather than the code that is familiar by native speakers.
