The big socialist thinkers was this tremendous burst of utopian thinking in the 1830s and 1840s in France. For Marx what he wants to do is to try to convert the socialist project from a utopian socialist project into a scientific socialist project. But in order to do that he just can't take English empiricism, English political economy, those kinds of things. So get yourself a dose of Hegel before you do Marx and then everything be okay.
