The Importance of External Performance in Powerlifting

The amount of claps and excitement you will get is somewhat tied to the load on the bar in powerlifting a meet or a weightlifting meet. There's no such thing as competing in bodybuilding and actually getting in stage shape and not trying hard. The requisite level of effort is there. And sometimes, just like all qualities can progress because we're adaptive beings as humans, your maximal effort that produced 80% of what eventually gets to 100%, it's not a physiological change.
