There is no navigation without an understanding of what's going on in the night sky. The military put up a system of global positioning satellites. They're in middle earth orbit, nothing to do with Lord of the Rings. Software will tell you where you want to go using the information about where you are. That was so that you can guide a missile with very high precision.
