The Knights of Mexico Set Up a Colony in Their Territory
The Knights of the Golden Circle wanted to set up a colony in Mexico. The plan was that they would help win the Mexican Civil War, and then do as they pleased afterwards. Negotiations with the liberal faction encountered problems deriving the legal basis for their plans. President James Buchanan talked about an American military force being used to settle the civil war.
