And you can literally build one at home now - not the expanding ones, but sort of alcohol vapour that falls down. You're seeing cosmic ray muons from the outer universe; alpha particles from radioactive substances around you. That's amazing. Even though we had no idea they were there until that was invented... I'm going to make a kit with it next time I go on Mad Men.
