The temple was the political and religious pivot of all Judaism, including the diaspora throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. Jews sent a tithe to the temple. So as you can imagine getting rid of the temple, huge theological problem. I would have to think they were hoping to win over the temple and have the followers of Jesus in charge there.
